This Designer's Festive Collection Was Inspired by 80's Retro Aesthetics
Very rarely do we see collections on the runway that hold our attention for the length of the entire presentation. This season, the honour was reserved for Payal Singhal, whose festive collection, Suroor, consisted of clothes so alluring in their form yet so surprisingly simple, you’d want to wear them every chance you get.
Payal Singhal peered into her past through a sepia lens of nostalgia to come up with the inspiration for this collection. For most of us, the last 18 months were defined by memories of our family; we either created new ones when we were unexpectedly forced into sequestering with them, and those who couldn’t afford that luxury meant relying on the happy ones from the past to keep them going. Singhal, too, looked back on the memories of wandering through textile markets of the ‘80s with her mother and rummaging through trunks of her grandmother’s garments and used that as a jumping off point. And this vintage aesthetic can be found in ebbs and flows throughout the collection.
